Big News for Canadians: Direct Flights to Puerto Escondido

As a Canadian who has made the journey to Puerto Escondido many times, I can say this is news worth celebrating: this winter, both WestJet and Air Canada are launching direct flights from Canada to Puerto Escondido (PXM).

Map showing new direct flights from Canada to Puerto Escondido (PXM): WestJet from Calgary (YYC) for CA$298 and Air Canada from Toronto (YYZ) for CA$387.

Starting on December 12, 2025, West Jet is launching direct flights to Puerto Escondido (PXM) from Calgary (YYC) for as low as $298 CAD.

Starting December 17, 2025, Air Canada is launching direct flights to Puerto Escondido (PXM) from Toronto (YYZ) for as low as $387 CAD.

That means no more overnight layovers in Mexico City. Just one flight, and you’ll be on the beach in less than 6 hours.

Until now, reaching Puerto Escondido usually meant multiple connections and a long overnight layover in Mexico City (especially if you’re coming from Vancouver or other Western Canadian cities). Safe, yes—but often exhausting and a bit daunting for a first time traveller, if you weren’t planning to leave the airport to explore the city before you hit the beach.

Picture this: landing at midnight and…

A. Trying to catch a few hours of rest in a noisy terminal. (Pro tip: Starbucks in Terminal 1 is surprisingly comfy—but don’t be thrown if they blast Katy Perry all night. It’s loud, but you might just get some work done if sleep isn’t happening. The gate chairs, on the other hand? Not so inviting.)

B. Debating whether to splurge on an airport hotel just to recharge before your morning flight. While there is a pretty pricey Hilton right inside the airport (I’ve stayed—it comes with a solid breakfast), there are also izZzleep sleep pods that feel like climbing into a mini spaceship and are much more affordable.

Either way, neither option beats falling asleep to the sound of waves—or the hum of the AC—in your room at Surfbreak PXM, in a bed you’ll actually call home during your stay.

For seasoned travellers, it’s a rite of passage. But for many, it can be intimidating enough to keep Puerto Escondido off the radar.

Of course, we always recommend a proper 24-hour stopover in Mexico City if you can. It’s an incredible city—vibrant, cultural, and absolutely worth exploring. I remember being blown away on my first visit: so green, so safe, and full of life. I’ve done both—venturing out on a layover and staying put to wait out the overnight hours. But as a single female traveler with limited Spanish, landing at midnight sometimes made me think twice about hopping in an Uber to a hotel across town. It’s not about safety—it’s more about comfort and convenience. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t do it at home in Canada either. So girl to girl (or guy), I get it if you’d rather skip that scenario. Sometimes, you just want to get to Puerto now.

That’s why these new direct flights are such a game changer for Canadians. With a single flight from Calgary or Toronto, you’ll arrive rested and ready to dive straight into the experience: coworking with an ocean view, exploring the Oaxacan coast, and connecting with our Surfbreak familia.

Here are the official announcements if you’d like to see the details:

Puerto Escondido has always been worth the journey. It’s one of the most magical places I’ve ever been for a reason, and why Surfbreak chose to build a coliving and coworking space here. But now it’s also easier, more affordable, and more accessible for Canadians.

So if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to experience coliving in Puerto Escondido, this is it. Direct flights begin December 12th (WestJet) and December 17th (Air Canada).

See you soon in Puerto this winter?
