When you call Surfbreak HNL home, the magic isn’t just in the surf sessions or sunset happy hours. It’s also in the wild spaces waiting just beyond the sidewalk.

Oahu’s incredible hiking trails offer a chance to step directly into the island’s stunning natural landscape. As you walk, you’ll move through misty rainforests, past ancient volcanic ridges, and alongside streams and waterfalls that have shaped the land for generations. Each trail presents a new adventure: rainforest mist that beads in your hair, ridgelines that get your pulse racing, and quiet moments that make you pause and take it all in.

Whether you’re looking to recharge after work or connect with Oahu’s natural rhythm, these five hikes are the perfect place to experience the island from above.

Lanikai Pillbox Hike

ree

Starting above the neighborhood of Lanikai, this ridge hike quickly delivers on its promise of spectacular scenery. The climb is steep but short, leading to two old military pillboxes now covered in colorful graffiti. From here, you can see the Mokulua Islands floating in turquoise water and the long stretch of Kailua Beach below. It’s a favorite sunrise spot, but just as beautiful in the afternoon when the ocean turns deep blue.

Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail

This paved, gently sloped trail is accessible yet full of dramatic coastline views. As you make your way up, the sweeping Pacific stretches out on one side, with the chance to spot humpback whales breaching in the winter. The red-roofed lighthouse at the end adds a picture-perfect touch. Because it’s short and straightforward, Makapu’u works well as a quick midday break or a refreshing walk to close out your day.

Mount Olympus Hike

ree

One of Oahu’s most challenging but rewarding summits, the Mount Olympus Hike takes you deep into the Koʻolau mountain range. The trail begins in lush forest, with roots and switchbacks guiding you steadily upward until the ridgeline opens to sweeping, almost 360-degree views of the island. On clear days, you can see from the windward coast to the southern shoreline in one breathtaking panorama. It’s a strenuous climb, but the sense of standing so high above Honolulu — with clouds drifting past — makes it unforgettable.

Maunawili Falls Trail

ree

Shaded, slippery, and full of jungle charm, the Maunawili Falls Trail winds through a tropical wonderland of ferns, vines, and the occasional wild ginger bloom. The endpoint is a picturesque waterfall cascading into a serene pool — a welcome spot to cool off with a swim if conditions allow. While the trail can get muddy after rain, that’s part of the fun, and every step deeper into the forest feels like you’re traveling back in time to an untouched Hawaii.

Moanalua Valley Trail

ree

Perfect for those seeking a challenge, the Moanalua Valley Trail leads you along a lush valley floor before climbing toward the infamous Stairway to Heaven (Haʻikū Stairs) from the legal “backside” route. The path passes remnants of old stone bridges and ancient Hawaiian terraces, slowly narrowing into a rugged ridgeline with jaw-dropping views in every direction. It’s a demanding hike, but one that connects you to both the island’s past and its most breathtaking natural scenery.

Whether you’re chasing sunrise over the Mokuluas, watching whales breach beyond Makapu‘u, or standing in the clouds high above Honolulu, hiking on Oahu is an invitation to experience the island in its purest form.

So lace up your shoes, step outside, and let Oahu show you the kind of beauty that stays with you long after you’re back home.
